Mechanical Engineer

Job Summary:

Reporting to the Engineering Manager - East, the Mechanical Engineer is responsible for engineering support of new recycling machinery projects, equipment installations, and existing operations within North America. The Mechanical Engineer also serves as a Project Engineer for equipment installations and other improvement projects.

NATURE AND SCOPE OF THE POSITION:
The Mechanical Engineer is responsible for carrying out various engineering-related projects and performing R&D of new equipment as directed, and is responsible for mechanical drafting support of projects using Autocad. This will include equipment trials, process improvements, time studies and other Mechanical/Industrial Engineering. The Mechanical Engineer is required to work within all related government legislation and company policies while ensuring business needs are met. The incumbent will be based in LaVergne, TN.

The Mechanical Engineer must be proficient in Autocad and familiar with Inventor. They must also be knowledgeable of 3 phase motor controls, hydraulics, and general millwright practices. The Mechanical Engineer must also posses extensive project management skills including RFP generation, Gantt charting, budgeting, and contractor management. The Mechanical Engineer must be able to perform infrequent repairs as directed.

SPECIFIC ACCOUNTABILITIES:

1. Supports all SRS NA sites with engineering expertise i.e. CAD drawings, ventilation testing & design, equipment design and layouts of existing and future equipment. This requires traveling frequently to various sites around North America as required.
2. Optimize existing Sims assets across North America
3. Determine proper machinery rebuild or repair techniques to keep critical equipment downtime to an absolute minimum.
4. Performs Project Manager duties when installing new equipment or additional equipment to current processes.
5. Help maintain/write policies, SOP’s for equipment usage. Performs FMEA, RCFA, cost analysis on new equipment and equipment usage.
6. Excellent communication with Engineering group colleagues and local site contacts.
7. Ensure engineering activity compliance with SimsMMway safety policies including Observational Behavioral Assessments.
8. Initiate and oversee process engineering projects using Lean and Six Sigma techniques.
9. Post project financial analysis and validation.
10. Perform maintenance audits and work closely with the various plant maintenance groups towards maximizing the Overall Equipment Effectiveness.
11. Profile shredded commodity characteristics and develop quality control programs.
12. Supervise Jr. Engineers as required.
13. Other duties as required.

Qualifications:

TRAINING and EXPERIENCE:
Engineering graduate as a minimum. Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering (BSME), Industrial Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or equivalent degree. At least 3 years demonstrated experience working in an industrial environment with machinery. Experience includes machinery improvement projects, machinery installation, project management, and drafting using Autocad. Understanding of the team concept and leadership skills. Must possess mechanical aptitude and be able to troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, hydraulic and pneumatic processes & PLC’s.

Role Summary/Purpose: As a key member of the global Invasive Cardiology engineering team, you will be working on products that gets used by physicians to diagnose and treat patients in interventional cardiology department. At the direction of the New Product Development Director, this Engineer will contribute to all areas of corporate research and development, with a primary focus on product design and testing activities.

JOB ESSENTIALS
Work with the industrial sales team to improve industrial products, create new solutions, and design custom tooling.
Visit industrial customers’ locations to assess their needs, solve problems, and identify new solutions for industrial cutting, routing and shaping applications.
Design new and innovative solutions to expand our current and future product categories and differentiate ourselves from the competition.
Conduct performance and life benchmark testing of Freud tools and competitors’ products
Conduct field testing of new products at customers’ locations to verify performance.
Work with engineering and manufacturing teams in Europe to implement new product designs.
Seek and research patent opportunities for new products and assist legal team with development of patent applications.

QUALIFICATIONS:
·         Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering

Essential Skills and Experience:
AUTOMOTIVE MANUFACTURING TOOLING/WELDING, STAMPING PROCESS, PRODUCT & PROCESS FEASABILITY, INTERFACE ENGINEERING
Experience with body in white assembly process/stamping/welding
Be a key interface between design and body shop manufacturing engineering.
Tooling experience in automated welding equipment and/or stamping dies
Stamping background with experience setting up stamping process 
Design for manufacturing experience
Prove manufacturing feasibility, enabling robust design and manufacturing assembly 
Product & process feasibility studies, stamping and or welding simulation and proposals

This is a key position and will be in charge of a number of duties including:
Conducting feasibility studies and testing on new and modified designs and directs support personnel in the preparation of detailed designs, design testing and prototype fabrication.
Planning, engineering and designing automation systems and is responsible for project planning activities, including labor and capital estimation, as well as scheduling and resource identification and allocation. 
Hands- on design activities include automation machines, equipment, systems, devices, and fixtures to satisfy specific requirements. 
Performing detailed design engineering activities to determine needs and translate them into functional machine solutions and drafts operations manuals, procedures and instructions and may train operations and maintenance personnel and is directly responsible for technical performance.
Determine specifications for materials, electronic components, construction and performance, including equipment speeds, tolerances, material handling techniques, etc. Meet time schedules and cost estimates on projects.
Sketch, design, and critique design work in AUTOCAD and Solidworks, including machine systems, machine mechanisms, including sub-assemblies, tooling, framing structure, motors, drive components, control systems, sensors, and accessory devices. Consider factors such as ease of setup, changeover and maintenance, reliability, biocompatibility, contamination control and economy. Select standard parts for incorporation into machine design. 
Develop leads and convey concepts and specifications to the Mechanical Designer through sketches and layouts. Direct the Mechanical Designer in the preparation of detailed designs and drawings and checks and evaluates drawings for conformance to parameters.

Knowledge of machine design, development, and engineering experience in small part, high speed manufacturing systems. 
Exposure to Six Sigma, Lean, process controls a PLUS.
Good Automated Manufacturing Practice (GAMP) / ISPE experience is desired.
Extensive background in manufacturing and machine shop capabilities. 
Extensive knowledge and experience in CAD, Autocad and Solidworks. 
Thorough understanding of strength of materials, kinematics and dynamics, vibration, and fluid flow, as well as plastic injection molding and metallic part assembly, bowl feeders, product handling, part transfer and fixturing, process tooling, pneumatics, lead screws, cam devices, stepper/servo motors, drive systems, slide systems, sensor technologies and application, and machine control systems. 
PC literate in Microsoft Office applications, including Microsoft Project.
