Is this normal for an interviewer to do this?
so today I went in for an interview and I was going in for the 2nd interview by the head chief executive
. now this is where it got weird, so she asked me about my previous jobs and said how much she liked that product over that product. then she started talking about her daughter? an her divorce ...then how she didn't finish college because she was making more money doing what she did for this company ... then she talked about how her teenage daughter is a handful... I just played it cool thinking she was using some sort of psychology thing to trick me into saying something stupid. the interview ended and she seemed happy an I was escorted to the door... now I'm freaking confused? is this normal behavior for an executive? like it felt like she was going to burst into tears at one point and tell me her life problems... is this normal? was she trying to see how I react or something?

It could be that she was trying to see how you would handle her outbursts. So many times while working you will have customers who will tell you way too much info! But you have to be nice, and listen to them, for they are the customers. She may have been testing to see whether you would remain silent or not.

While it is definitely not normal for an interviewer to share such personal facts about herself I would think that she was having a very hard time in her life at the time of the interview. For some odd reason she felt that YOU would be open to just sitting and listening without trying to give HER advice.

Maybe she was seeing if you could take control of a conversation or maybe push it in the right direction....Good Luck!

Many employers are over worked and over their stress limit with no one to vent with regarding life in and out of their everyday circumstances. True, many interviewers today may be attempting to gain some perspective on how a potential employee may handle stressful situations and how their own personal baggage brought.

I think it is very abnormal and she should take a vacation or see a counselor. That is very unprofessional behavior. I would be afraid to work for her. You don't want to be her emotional sounding board.

Had an interview kind of like this once. Not much related to the job as I think I had that wrapped up already after interviewing with HR and with my immediate superior. Those went well because I tested well and because my boss obviously liked me and was selling me on the job basically.

The entire discussion during an interview or during business hours is totally unprofessional. Keep applying for other jobs, not that you'll be rejected from this opportunity, mostly likely you'll get the job because you're a good listener. However, do you really want to be your boss' counselor?

I think that it is important to understand that the prospective employer is not only "sizing you up"and evaluating you but a job interview is an opportunity for you to "size up "and evaluate a prospective employer.

People, calm down. I know I'm late, but just had to revisit this. Nothing is wrong with the interviewer. Every manager has their own interviewing style. I have been interviewed where we hardly talked about the job and did now talk of my skills that much. Managers do know how to read. If your resume has enough.

This person know anything about job interview. The botton line it was not a job interview. The equal employment opportunity law can help you for future, go to EEO page, and get informed!!!!!!!!!!!

Because people are not trained to be professional communicators and professional interviewers, they resort to bazaar methods to check out candidates. It resounds with illiteracy and lack of ability to "check out" a candidate without resorting to poor strategies. There are more professional ways to "test" a candidate.

Maybe she was just trying to test you once again, But... what about your CV and Cover letter? Where they convincing enough?
