Mechanical Engineer

Job Summary:

Reporting to the Engineering Manager - East, the Mechanical Engineer is responsible for engineering support of new recycling machinery projects, equipment installations, and existing operations within North America. The Mechanical Engineer also serves as a Project Engineer for equipment installations and other improvement projects.

NATURE AND SCOPE OF THE POSITION:
The Mechanical Engineer is responsible for carrying out various engineering-related projects and performing R&D of new equipment as directed, and is responsible for mechanical drafting support of projects using Autocad. This will include equipment trials, process improvements, time studies and other Mechanical/Industrial Engineering. The Mechanical Engineer is required to work within all related government legislation and company policies while ensuring business needs are met. The incumbent will be based in LaVergne, TN.

The Mechanical Engineer must be proficient in Autocad and familiar with Inventor. They must also be knowledgeable of 3 phase motor controls, hydraulics, and general millwright practices. The Mechanical Engineer must also posses extensive project management skills including RFP generation, Gantt charting, budgeting, and contractor management. The Mechanical Engineer must be able to perform infrequent repairs as directed.

SPECIFIC ACCOUNTABILITIES:

1. Supports all SRS NA sites with engineering expertise i.e. CAD drawings, ventilation testing & design, equipment design and layouts of existing and future equipment. This requires traveling frequently to various sites around North America as required.
2. Optimize existing Sims assets across North America
3. Determine proper machinery rebuild or repair techniques to keep critical equipment downtime to an absolute minimum.
4. Performs Project Manager duties when installing new equipment or additional equipment to current processes.
5. Help maintain/write policies, SOP’s for equipment usage. Performs FMEA, RCFA, cost analysis on new equipment and equipment usage.
6. Excellent communication with Engineering group colleagues and local site contacts.
7. Ensure engineering activity compliance with SimsMMway safety policies including Observational Behavioral Assessments.
8. Initiate and oversee process engineering projects using Lean and Six Sigma techniques.
9. Post project financial analysis and validation.
10. Perform maintenance audits and work closely with the various plant maintenance groups towards maximizing the Overall Equipment Effectiveness.
11. Profile shredded commodity characteristics and develop quality control programs.
12. Supervise Jr. Engineers as required.
13. Other duties as required.

Qualifications:

TRAINING and EXPERIENCE:
Engineering graduate as a minimum. Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering (BSME), Industrial Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or equivalent degree. At least 3 years demonstrated experience working in an industrial environment with machinery. Experience includes machinery improvement projects, machinery installation, project management, and drafting using Autocad. Understanding of the team concept and leadership skills. Must possess mechanical aptitude and be able to troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, hydraulic and pneumatic processes & PLC’s.
